Antique rare Bedouin Yemen middle eastern tribal silver box amulet, Hirz prayer
Antique rare Bedouin Yemen middle eastern tribal silver box amulet, Hirz prayer box
This is a very old antique beautiful Yemen tribal silver amulet box called a Hirz which probably holds a quote from the Koran inside of it. It is shaped like a pillow with a curved front and back. It is sealed. The decoration is very very fine silver work and has three rings at the top currently strung on a small piece of leather thonging for hanging in the house to provide protection. It has fine filigree decoration around a central wheel like pattern overlaid with four diamond shaped sheets of silver in the corner. It is attached to a leather thong which would have been hooked onto a belt or saddle. You could adapt it as a fabulous tribal necklace by threading a chain through it. Very easy.
There are no marks on it. Old tribal silver from this area is composed of 80% or 90% silver and there is no universal hallmarking system. I have chemically tested it and it is silver.
The amulet has four sets of delicate bells (ghrungrus) along the bottom edge and as it is hollow their sound is amplified when it moves.
In good vintage condition - a few dings from age and it has a wonderful patina of age particularly on the back.
It is 2 1/8" (5.5cm) wide X 3 1/2" (9cm) long X 3/4" (2cm) deep.
It is 60gms in weight.
